How to Order Molex Connectors and Crimp Tools Without Wasting Time (or Money)

If you're an administrative buyer or office manager who's been handed the task of sourcing Molex connectors and crimp tools—maybe for a prototype build, a repair, or a small production run—this is for you. When I took over purchasing in 2020, I made every mistake you can make with connector orders. This guide will save you the frustration (and the awkward email to your boss).

There are four steps to getting this right. Here they are.

Step 1: Confirm the Exact Molex Part Number

Don't guess. Don't rely on what you think the engineer meant. A connector plug and its housing may look identical but have different keying or polarization. A crimp terminal may look like the right one but be for a different wire gauge.

Your checklist here:

  • Get the exact series name (e.g., Mini-Fit Jr., Micro-Fit 3.0, PicoBlade).
  • Get the exact circuit count (e.g., 4-pin, 6-pin, 14-pin).
  • Get the exact part number from the datasheet. Not the drawing number. Not the customer reference.

Most people skip asking for the datasheet. Don't. Molex publishes comprehensive specification sheets for every product line, and they include the correct ordering numbers for all variants—housing, terminal, and any accessories.

One thing I learned the hard way (actually, the expensive way): engineers often reference a part by its series name only. In 2021, I ordered 100 Mini-Fit Jr. housings and got the 2-circuit version instead of the 4-circuit. Because I didn't verify the part number on the datasheet (ugh). The engineer had just said "Mini-Fit Jr. plug." Not his fault—mine for not clarifying.

Step 2: Know Your Inventory vs. Lead Time

From the outside, it looks like all distributors stock everything. The reality is they don't. Some Molex products are high-volume and always on the shelf. Others are niche and have lead times of 8 weeks or more. I wish I had tracked this more carefully in my first year.

What I can say anecdotally from our ordering history: common power connectors (like Mini-Fit Jr.) and standard crimp terminals are usually in stock. But specialty items—like high-density interconnects or custom-coded housings—often aren't.

Before you place an order:

  • Ask your distributor for current stock levels. Not "estimated." Current.
  • If an item is on backorder, ask for the factory lead time, not the distributor's best guess.
  • Always ask if there's a substitute part available. Sometimes a different keying position is in stock and the engineer can work with it.

People assume the fastest option is the most expensive. Actually, the fastest option is the one that's already in stock. The price difference between a stocked part and a backordered one is often negligible.

Step 3: Verify the Crimp Tool Specs

This is where most administrative buyers trip up. Ordering a Molex crimp terminal tool seems straightforward—until the tool arrives and doesn't fit the terminal you bought.

Molex crimp tools are not one-size-fits-all. Each terminal series requires a specific tool or at least a specific applicator and die set. The Molex crimp terminal tool for a Standard .093" pin is not the same as the tool for a Micro-Fit 3.0 terminal, even though both terminals look vaguely similar.

How to get this right:

  1. Look at the terminal datasheet. It will list the recommended hand tool, the production tool, and the die set.
  2. If in doubt, order a sample kit first. Many distributors offer Molex sample packs for a nominal fee.
  3. Check the tool's specs against the wire gauge you'll be using. A tool may work on 18-22 AWG but not 24 AWG.

I went back and forth between a manual hand tool and a pneumatic tool for about two weeks. The hand tool was cheaper ($185 vs. $1,200) but the pneumatic tool was faster. On paper, the hand tool made sense. But my gut said we'd produce over 500 terminations in the next year, so I went with the pneumatic. That was the right call—it saved about 15 hours of manual work annually. (Mental note: I should write up the cost-benefit calculation for that decision one day.)

Step 4: Always Confirm the Distributor's Support (Not Just Their Price)

The lowest price on a Molex connector plug might look like a win. But the distributor who can't provide proper invoicing or technical support will cost you more in the long run. The vendor who couldn't provide a proper tax invoice cost us $2,400 in rejected expense reports one quarter. Finance was not happy.

What to verify before placing a large order (with any distributor):

  • Can they provide a commercial invoice with the correct business details?
  • Do they have a returns policy for wrong parts?
  • Can they help with part number cross-references if your engineering team is unsure?
  • Do they stock Molex tooling accessories (like extractors and insertion tools) alongside the main products?

The assumption is that all distributors are equal because they all sell the same brands. The reality is that some are re-sellers with no inventory, no application support, and no warranty on tooling. Stick with distributors that Molex itself lists as authorized. If you need to find one, check the Molex distributor locator on their official site.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Here's what I've seen go wrong (sometimes because I made the mistake myself):

Buying loose terminals without the correct insertion tool. You can't just push a crimped terminal into a housing with your fingers. It needs a hand insertion tool, and those tools are also series-specific. Skipping this step means the terminal may not seat properly, causing intermittent connections.

Ordering pre-crimped wires without specifying the exact cut length. When we ordered 100 cables for a medical device prototype, the distributor sent them at 200mm instead of 150mm. We had to re-terminate every single one (ugh).

Forgetting the tooling accessories. A crimp tool is useless without the correct die set. A die set is useless without the correct locator. Check the tooling manual carefully. Molex publishes these manuals online for free, which is a huge help.

What was best practice in 2020 may not apply in 2025. Five years ago, I could call a distributor and get a price quote over the phone. Now, online ordering is the norm, and the best prices are often only available through the distributor's web portal. I had to update our entire procurement process for this—it's faster, but it took some adjustment.

The fundamentals haven't changed: know your part number, confirm the tool is compatible, and buy from a source you trust. But the execution has transformed. And that's okay—as long as you adapt.
