Molex 2695, Enclosures, and the Right Way to Buy Connectors: Three Scenarios

Searching for “Molex Phoenix AZ” or “Molex 2695” usually means you need a part, not a philosophy. But here’s what I’ve learned after twelve years of ordering Molex Corporation parts for production lines: there is no single correct answer until you identify your situation.

I’m a process engineer. In my first year (2017), I ordered the wrong crimp tool for a batch of connectors and didn’t catch it until the first production pilot. The result? 1,200 crimp terminals had to be stripped and redone. The material cost was around $900. The schedule delay was worse. Since then I’ve kept a checklist and started documenting every mistake. I still make new ones. But I don’t make the same ones twice.

The reason this topic resists a universal answer is that “connector ordering” is really three different tasks. On the surface, they look the same. In practice, each one needs a different set of checks.

The connector has to match a terminal, a tool, a wire gauge, and an enclosure. Get one of those wrong, and the product fails later, usually at the worst possible moment.

Scenario A: You Have a Part Number

Let’s start with the easiest case: you have a part number.

Say it’s Molex 2695. In a bill of materials, that number refers to a hand crimp tool, not the connector. That distinction matters. A buyer on our team once assumed they were ordering a connector because “2695” was in the description. The tool showed up, and nobody recognized it. Not the tool’s fault. The communication failure was mine. I said “the tool we need.” They heard “the tool from last year.” Those were not the same thing.

When you have a part number, your job is to verify, not just buy. What I mean by verify is not checking that the product page exists. Open the datasheet. Check the series, the contact family, and the tooling revision. Then buy from an authorized distributor. I know it feels slower than a consumer order. But when you need traceability, a random listing won’t help.

Per FTC guidelines (ftc.gov), claims like “compatible with Molex” have to be substantiated. That doesn’t mean every marketplace listing follows the rule. It means you are the one who absorbs the risk.

Why does this matter? Because your customer never sees your purchase order. They see the final product. If the connector is a cheap knockoff, the failure shows up in their hands. That failure becomes their perception of your brand. I’m not saying you need the most expensive option. I’m saying cheap components are not a place to save.

Scenario B: You Have a Sample or Drawing, But No Part Number

This is where the big mistakes happen. I once matched two connectors by the color of the plastic enclosure. The enclosures looked identical. Same color, same general size. They weren’t compatible because the keying was different. The order quantity was 800 units, and every single one had to be discarded. The purchase was $450; the embarrassment was worse.

Lesson: the enclosure is not the connector. In Molex terms, the enclosure, or housing, is often only the outer shell. You also need the terminals, which are matched to a specific wire range and current rating. You need the right crimp tool, which is matched to the terminal, not the housing. And you need the mating side, which may come from a different product series. “Same specifications” across vendors does not mean the same interpretation.

Start with the mating surface. Measure the pitch: the distance between pin centers. That number narrows down the series. Then look for the series name printed on the housing. If you can’t read it, take clear photos and call your distributor’s technical line. The ten minutes on the phone is cheaper than a one-week delay.

Scenario C: You Need One Part Quickly

The third scenario is the one I still get wrong sometimes: you need one part quickly.

The common mistake is to treat this as a consumer purchase. Search for the part, click buy, done. But one-off repairs require the same verification as production orders because the repair becomes a permanent operation if nobody records it.

For example, when you order terminals for a one-off repair, don’t order plain pliers to crimp them. A proper Molex 2695 hand crimp tool, or the exact tool for your terminal family, is a one-time cost. The first time I skipped it, I saved $80. Then I re-crimped 40 wires over a weekend. Looking back, I should have bought the right tool. At the time, it felt like a small risk. It wasn’t.

Why do I care so much about the tool? Because quality is how customers judge you. When our company switched from generic crimp pliers to the correct Molex tooling, client feedback scores went up by about 23%.   2. Do I have a drawing or physical sample without a number? Start in Scenario B.
  3. Do I need one part for a repair? Start in Scenario C, but do the same verification anyway.

If you selected more than one, do Scenario B first. The only thing worse than buying the wrong part is buying a bag of wrong parts and calling them “close enough.”

The Bottom Line

No one searches “where to buy blood pressure monitor” and worries about terminal crimp height. That’s the point. A connector order isn’t a consumer purchase. It’s a small engineering decision. The right answer depends on your starting point, your volume, and your tolerance for risk.
